Popular Heartburn Meds Linked to Fatal Conditions
In the past few years, there have been reports in the media about the link between popular heartburn medications known as PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) and fatal conditions. A new study that was just published in the British Medical Journal found a link between PPI use and stomach cancer, kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. The longer the use, the more likely the condition is to occur, regardless of dosage. Meaning, even at low doses, it did not matter. If you take these drugs for long periods of time, you could be in trouble!
“Taking PPIs over many months or years is not safe, and now we have a clearer picture of the health conditions associated with long-term PPI use,” said senior author Ziyad Al-Aly, MD, an assistant professor of medicine at the School of Medicine. He has led several studies associating PPIs to chronic kidney disease and an increased risk of death.
