The Holiday Survival Blueprint: A Gentle Guide to Staying Balanced Through the Season
By Dr. Amy Shouse Filippelli, DACM, MS, LAc San Rafael Acupuncture + Integrative Medicine | Norcalintegrativemedicine.com
The holidays have a way of sneaking up on us. One minute we’re carving pumpkins and the next minute someone is handing us peppermint bark and asking what we’re doing for New Year’s.
And as joyful as this season can be, it also comes with… a lot.
A lot of pressure.
A lot of sugar.
A lot of emotions.
A lot of disrupted routines.
A lot of expectations (spoken and unspoken).
If you’re already feeling a little worn down—tired, puffy, wired-but-tired, craving sugar, or just not quite yourself—you’re not alone. Your body is navigating real physiological and emotional stressors.
The good news: there are simple, compassionate ways to support yourself as you move through this season. Below is your Holiday Survival Blueprint—a grounded, heartfelt guide to help you feel more steady, nourished, and connected.
1. Calm Your Nervous System (it’s carrying more than you think)
The nervous system is the quiet hero of the holiday season. It’s constantly processing family dynamics, travel, socializing, crowds, late nights, overstimulation, and emotional load.
Even small moments of regulation can make a huge difference.
Try:
- 4–2–6 breathing for one minute (in for 4 seconds, hold for 2, out for 6)
- Pressing Yin Tang (between your eyebrows) to quiet your mind
- Pressing Pericardium 6 (inner forearm) when you feel anxious or overwhelmed
- Dropping your shoulders and lengthening your exhale
These micro-moments help your body return to a sense of safety and presence.
Where acupuncture helps:
Acupuncture activates the parasympathetic nervous system—your rest-and-digest mode. Many patients tell me their sessions during this season feel like “my body finally exhaled.”
2. Support Your Digestion (the emotional center of the body)
Digestive health plays a huge role in how we feel mentally and physically, and the holidays aren’t exactly gentle on the gut. Between richer meals, alcohol, travel, and sugar everywhere you turn, digestion often needs extra support.
Try:
- Start your morning with protein + minerals to steady blood sugar
- Use lemon water or digestive bitters before heavier meals
- Take a slow 10-minute walk after eating
- Consider magnesium in the evening for digestion and sleep
- Enjoy holiday foods with intention—not avoidance or guilt
Where acupuncture helps:
Acupuncture can calm gut inflammation, ease bloating, regulate digestion, and support the gut-brain axis (the pathway that connects stress to digestive discomfort).
3. Protect Your Sleep (your inner anchor)
Sleep is where your mood stabilizes, your hormones regulate, and your immune system restores itself. During the holidays, sleep often takes the first hit.
Try:
- Keep a gentle, consistent bedtime
- Avoid caffeine after 12pm
- Dim lights in the evening to signal wind-down
- Take a warm shower to activate parasympathetic calm
- Reduce screen time when possible (your nervous system will thank you)
Where acupuncture helps:
Many of my holiday-season patients come in with restless, disrupted, or “light” sleep. Acupuncture can help the body settle into deeper, more restorative rest.
4. Honor the Signs Your Body Sends
Your body tries to communicate long before things fall apart. During the holidays, its messages may sound like:
- Irritability or emotional sensitivity
- Sugar cravings
- Brain fog
- Feeling “puffy” or inflamed
- Trouble focusing
- Anxiety or feeling easily overwhelmed
- Being tired but unable to settle
- Feeling just… off
These aren’t weaknesses. They’re invitations to care for yourself a little more gently.
5. You Don’t Have to Push Through Alone
One of the biggest misconceptions is that stress is just “part of the holidays.”
But you’re allowed to feel good this time of year. You’re allowed to have support.
You’re allowed to prioritize your wellbeing—even when life gets busy.
Acupuncture is a deeply restorative tool during this season.
It helps regulate the nervous system, support digestion, settle inflammation, calm the mind, and anchor the body back into balance.
